Maintenance, or Spousal Support, (formerly known as Alimony), is a court-mandated payment from one spouse to the other during and/or following a divorce. The purpose of Maintenance or Spousal Support is to provide the recipient spouse with financial support to maintain the lifestyle a spouse enjoyed prior to the divorce.

Historically courts in Illinois used several criteria to determine the amount and duration of maintenance payments, such as the age of the parties, their current and potential earnings, and other factors. Now, however, Illinois has a specific formula that is to be used by Illinois courts to calculate maintenance.
